Is Octoplus worth it?
Short answer: yes – especially if you can shift heavy electricity use to off-peak windows and you’ll actually engage with the app. Octoplus is free to join, doesn’t change your tariff, and pays out in real bill credit rather than vouchers — so the downside is zero. The upside scales with how much you participate.
What a typical Octoplus user can realistically earn
| Feature | Realistic annual value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Saving Sessions | £20–£50 over a winter | High-usage households that can shift big loads (EV, washing, heating) can push past £100. |
| Power-ups | £5–£15 | Variable, depends on how often you catch the free windows in the app. |
| Octoplus Perks | £20+ | Only if you actually use the partner offers — free for those who do, zero for those who don’t. |
| Octoplus Points | £5–£20 | Slow drip from everyday actions; adds up over a year. |
| Typical engaged user | £30–£100 / year | More for households that can shift significant load during Saving Sessions. |
To put that in context: the average UK household’s annual electricity bill is around £900, so a typical Octoplus user can knock 3–11% off their bill for very little effort. It won’t change your life, but it’s free money that lots of customers leave on the table simply by not opting in.
When Octoplus is most worth it
- You’re home on winter weekday evenings (when most Saving Sessions run, between 5–7pm).
- You can shift heavy loads — washing machines, dishwashers, EV charging, electric heating — out of session windows.
- You’ll open the Octopus app regularly enough to opt into sessions and catch Power-ups.
When it’s less worth it
- You’re rarely home in the evening, or work shifts that conflict with session times.
- You can’t easily shift big electricity loads (e.g. electric heating on a fixed schedule).
- You won’t engage with the app — passive customers earn very little.
Even in those cases, opting in costs nothing and you’ll still pick up the odd Power-up and Perk over the year. There’s genuinely no downside to joining.
How to opt in
- Open the Octopus Energy app on your phone (or sign in to your online account).
- Find the Octoplus section and tap Opt in.
- Turn on notifications so you don’t miss Saving Sessions and Power-ups.
- Sessions and rewards now run automatically — credits land on your bill a few weeks after each event, similar to how the £50 referral credit timing works.
Not an Octopus customer yet? You’ll need to switch first before you can join Octoplus — and you can claim a £50 bill credit on the way in. See whether the Octopus referral scheme is legit and our guide to switching to Octopus Energy.
