Octopus Energy Cash

Earn rewards through the Octoplus scheme

Octoplus is Octopus Energy’s free rewards programme that lets existing customers earn credit on their bills through Saving Sessions, free electricity hours and a wider perks scheme. There’s no fee to join, no contract change, and rewards are automatic once you opt in via the Octopus app.

Octoplus includes four moving parts, all bundled into one free programme:

  • Saving Sessions – Octopus pays you to reduce electricity use during short windows of high grid demand (mostly winter, weekday evenings).
  • Power-ups – short windows of free electricity announced via the app on days when there’s spare green power on the grid.
  • Octoplus Perks – discounts and freebies at partner brands (cinema, coffee, retail).
  • Octoplus Points – points earned for everyday actions in the app, redeemable as bill credit.

Is Octoplus worth it?

Short answer: yes – especially if you can shift heavy electricity use to off-peak windows and you’ll actually engage with the app. Octoplus is free to join, doesn’t change your tariff, and pays out in real bill credit rather than vouchers — so the downside is zero. The upside scales with how much you participate.

What a typical Octoplus user can realistically earn

FeatureRealistic annual valueNotes
Saving Sessions£20–£50 over a winterHigh-usage households that can shift big loads (EV, washing, heating) can push past £100.
Power-ups£5–£15Variable, depends on how often you catch the free windows in the app.
Octoplus Perks£20+Only if you actually use the partner offers — free for those who do, zero for those who don’t.
Octoplus Points£5–£20Slow drip from everyday actions; adds up over a year.
Typical engaged user£30–£100 / yearMore for households that can shift significant load during Saving Sessions.

To put that in context: the average UK household’s annual electricity bill is around £900, so a typical Octoplus user can knock 3–11% off their bill for very little effort. It won’t change your life, but it’s free money that lots of customers leave on the table simply by not opting in.

When Octoplus is most worth it

  • You’re home on winter weekday evenings (when most Saving Sessions run, between 5–7pm).
  • You can shift heavy loads — washing machines, dishwashers, EV charging, electric heating — out of session windows.
  • You’ll open the Octopus app regularly enough to opt into sessions and catch Power-ups.

When it’s less worth it

  • You’re rarely home in the evening, or work shifts that conflict with session times.
  • You can’t easily shift big electricity loads (e.g. electric heating on a fixed schedule).
  • You won’t engage with the app — passive customers earn very little.

Even in those cases, opting in costs nothing and you’ll still pick up the odd Power-up and Perk over the year. There’s genuinely no downside to joining.

How to opt in

  1. Open the Octopus Energy app on your phone (or sign in to your online account).
  2. Find the Octoplus section and tap Opt in.
  3. Turn on notifications so you don’t miss Saving Sessions and Power-ups.
  4. Sessions and rewards now run automatically — credits land on your bill a few weeks after each event, similar to how the £50 referral credit timing works.

Octoplus & Octopoints — frequently asked questions

What is Octoplus?

Octoplus is Octopus Energy’s free rewards programme for existing customers. It rewards you for energy-saving behaviour, daily app engagement, and participating in grid-balancing events called Saving Sessions. The points you earn — called Octopoints — can be redeemed for bill credit, retailer gift cards, or entered into prize draws.

What are Octopoints?

Octopoints are the in-app currency of Octoplus. You earn them through Saving Sessions (reducing usage when the grid is stressed), referring friends to switch to Octopus, completing daily app check-ins and quizzes, and entering weekly prize draws. 800 Octopoints = £1 of bill credit, and points can also be redeemed for retailer gift cards.

Is Octoplus free?

Yes — Octoplus is completely free for all Octopus Energy customers. There’s no subscription, no premium tier, and no purchase required to earn Octopoints. You just need to be an active Octopus Energy electricity customer and opt in through the Octopus app.

How do I earn Octopoints?

The main ways to earn Octopoints are: (1) participating in Saving Sessions during periods of grid stress, typically 50–200 points per session and multiple sessions per winter; (2) referring friends to switch to Octopus, which also earns the £50 switch credit; (3) daily app check-ins, quizzes, and energy-saving tasks; and (4) entering and winning weekly Octoplus prize draws.

Is Octoplus worth it?

For most Octopus customers, yes — it’s a free way to earn £20–£100 back per year with minimal effort. The biggest earnings come from Saving Sessions during winter (October–March), where engaged customers typically earn £50–£100 across the season. Casual users who only do app check-ins earn closer to £5–£15 per year. There’s no downside to opting in since it’s free.
